ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to compare the outcome of external DCR with and without stenting with silicon tube and analyse the results of silicon intubation whether it improves the overall success rate of DCR. Success rate for external DCR without STI was 80% in our study .Success rate for DCR with STI rose to 92%.Therefore DCR with STI is a highly successful procedure with a success rate of over 90%.Using the ST is a fairly simple procedure and takes just a few minutes to intubate the anastamosis.By using the ST the commonest cause of failure ie the closure of common canalicular opening is prevented thereby enhancing the success rate of DCR.External DCR still is a preferred modality of treating CDC as compared to Endoscopic DCR or Laser DCR, having a much better rate of success over these procedures.

ABSTRACT

The Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) syndrome is a rare systemic disorder of uveitis, dysacousia, vitiligo, premature graying of the hair, eyebrows and eyelashes, and meningoencephalitis. Although frequently unrecognised,VKH may affect children. We report a case of a 10 year old girl who presented with headache and dimness of vision and was diagnosed as papillitis on the basis of bilateral disc edema. However over the course of time developed skin changes(poliosis, vitiligo over lower back)and depigmented patches in inferior fundus suggesting diagnosis of VKH disease. Thus the diagnosis is difficult in the absence of extraocular manifestations. In such cases the diagnosis is based on clinical evolution of the disease.

ABSTRACT

A prospective study undertaken to study the profile the various sub types of glaucoma in the Kashmir Valley to document the prevlance and clinical manifestations of the various type of glaucomas was conducted in the glaucoma clinic of the Post Graduate Department of Ophthalmology, Govt. Medical College ,Srinagar, Kashmir. 200 patients (400 eyes) were included. All patients underwent a comprehensive and exhaustive Glaucoma work up to diagnose classify and treatment modalities were suggested. Pseudoexfoliation glaucoma was the largest group of glaucoma patients in the study (40.25%). 29% had POAG.;7.25% had angle closure glaucoma. This is in contrast to most studies in India where this group forms the largest group of all Glaucomas. Male female ratio was 7:3. Females were more affected by angle closure glaucoma. 60% patients had various degrees of glaucomatous optic atrophy on presentation.Early detection, proper training of medical professionals to do a basic IOP examination and fundus examination, awareness about glaucoma is need of hour.

ABSTRACT

The Prevalence of exfiolative glaucoma has shown extensive variation all over world ranging from 0 to 50%. To know the prevalence of exfoliative glaucoma in Kashmir. A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2006 to January 2007 on 300 patients with documented raised intra ocular pressure [IOP], glaucomatous changes in the fundus and open angle of anterior chamber. The study included 236 males and 64 females. Out of 300 patients, 115 had exfiolative glaucoma and among those left eye was involved in 47 patients, right eye in 31 and 37 had bilateral involvement. The patients above 60 years of age were found to have this condition more frequently as compared to those below 60 years of age. Occupation of patients had a strong association with this condition, as the disorder was seen more commonly in patients engaged in outdoor activites. The patients with exfiolative glaucoma were found to be having less Visual acuity; a higher IOP at presentation and a more severe and early optic nerve head involvement as compared to those with open angle glaucoma. The study reveals that prevalence of exfoliative glaucoma as seen in our OPD based cross sectional study was found to be 38.3%. This prevalence was high as compared to prevalence studies conducted in southern parts of the country and low as compared to the studies conducted in the Scandinavian countries. The difference in the prevalence of the condition was probably inpart related to the differences in the climatic conditions, ethnic origin and in part related to genetic factors of the studied population
